Dane by Liliana Hart
(Novella #1: MacKenzie Family Series)
Source: Purchase
My Rating: 5/5 stars
My Review:

Dane MacKenzie has been gone from his home for ten long years. He has travelled the world established himself as a preeminent writer willing to go where he must or needs to in order to get the story. Even after all he has been through and all he has seen, Dane’s greatest fear is setting foot in his hometown of Surrender, Montana. When he left ten years ago, Dane didn’t just leave his family he also left the only woman he has ever truly loved, Charlotte Munroe.

Charlotte Munroe never thought she would need to return to Surrender, Montana but when her father passed away someone had to come home and look after his ranch. Her one and show more only love, Dane MacKenzie has been gone for years so Charlotte feels certain her secret will remain safe. During the day, Charlotte works in her automotive garage and by night, she cares for her secret, her son.

Though neither Dane nor Charlotte ever thought there was a future for them everything changes the night Dane returns to Surrender. Holy crap is it a homecoming to remember. Even though the two haven’t see one another in ten years, the chemistry is still strong and thank the Lord, so is the desk in Charlotte’s office  The reunion is explosive and intense and Dane is ready to commit to a future with the woman he still loves. Charlotte is all kinds of glad to have gotten laid but a future with Dane is dangerous. He left once and he could leave again at any time and this time, Charlotte has more than just herself to think about.

The Bottom Line: This is a fantastic second chance at love story with two hot characters and some even hotter sex. Dane is such a softie (except for his body which is all kinds of hard!) and though he was a right sh*t for leaving Charlotte and Surrender the first time around, his reasons were valid and he thoroughly explains everything to her. Charlotte is tough, resilient and willing to give Dane another chance as long as he stays true to his word and doesn’t hurt her son. For two souls as perfect for one another as Dane and Charlotte are, the past can be overlooked and a happy future looked forward too. Finally, Dane is also a very good introduction to the MacKenzie clan as a whole and was more than enough to hook me on the series.

I enjoyed this book, but I think it was too short and far too abruptly cut off. It's a romance, so I'm not even going to talk about practicalities. But I will say I have a problem with the lust being called love. I didn't have enough background on the characters to feel like the story was all that believable. For me, a really good romance is one that makes me believe it could be possible even in the face of it "so never happening." In other words, lie to me good people! This book didn't do so, unfortunately. I still want to figure out what the heck got cut off by the abrupt ending though. Must wait for a bit to read the next one though. Note to self: do not start books that claim to be the beginning of a series when you don't have time show more to read the rest. show less
Way too short. The plot had potential for a lot of expansion, but all the sex got in the way of what could have been a great story. It was impossible to get a sense of who the characters were to each other or could be in the future. I can't accept a happily ever after without any work. I need more to this story.
This is the kind of story that you know what will happen in the end without even reading it. Dane comes back after 10 years of absence and sees Charlie the girl who loves 10 years and finds out that they have a child together. In less than 24 (less than 12 to be honest) hours they have sex more (than once), Dane finds out that he is a father, Charlie forgives him and they end up together. I would prefer to see more action and I think things were way too easy for Dane and Charlie since they got together again
In my opinion, given the backstory, the relationship conclusion was a little rushed. But the writing was solid and the characters engaging from the first page. I'll be looking for more from this author, for sure. Hopefully, a longer story. :)

This book was amazing. I was so in love with the male character, and I could feel the emotions he and the she character were feeling. I found this book very predictable though. However, I couldn't stop reading until the end.
