I stopped watching Masterpiece Theater a couple decades ago, so this is still the best thing I've ever seen on it. Great acting, great story, and enough intrigue, back-stabbing and sexual escapades to fill five soap operas. I painstakingly taped it off of television over a three month period and haven't been quite able to part with those tapes, even though I have the DVD. First watched it in college, and none of us could wait for it from one week to the next. The books are also good, though the second one spends way too much time on Herrod for my taste.
The series charts the transformation of Rome from a strife-torn Republic to a totalitarian state. However this is less the grand telling of history than the blackest of comedies about the most dysfunctional family in history! Murder, incest, madness, paedophilia - none of the slimy stones are left unturned as the vitriolic remnants of Roman historians like Seutonius are dramatised (often caricatured) and presented through the eyes of 'old Uncle Claudius' the gentle, handicapped but erudite member of the family who manages to keep his head down long enough to become the reluctant Emperor.
