Description
Poor Inspector Tibbett! Once again, he is attempting to have a nice vacation. And once again, Crime has a different idea. This time, Tibbett and his cheerful wife, Emmy, are lazing on a friend's yacht, tacking from one little English sea-town to the next, and it should all be delicious indolence . . . except that Henry can't stop thinking about death. Well, one death in particular. The death of a local sailor. And he especially can't stop thinking about it when it starts looking as though show more the drowned sailor is somehow connected to the robbery at a nearby manor-house. As with so many of the books in this series, much of the pleasure lies in the setting's timelessness: It's officially 1961 for The Sunken Sailor, but in Berrybridge Haven, and on England's peaceful waterways, it is time out of mind. show lessTags

Inspector Tibbett and his wife Emmy are invited for a lazy sailing holiday along the coast. Fresh fish, oysters, local pubs, and an easy introduction to the everyday sailors in the local club, and to the local squire and his family, also sailors. Tales, tall and otherwise abound and the interwoven stories of sailing, burglary and drownings gets Inspector Tibbett's instincts buzzing.
Originally published in 1961, this is a lovely book that seems well chosen for today's readers and, as far as I can see, reprinted without revisions. I can't compare it to other books by Patricia Moyes but here she expresses what we can consider modernish sensibilities in very pleasing prose.
Definitely worth reading.

Almost an evocation of place more than a mystery, perhaps like many Moyes books. The main action takes place in a small pub in a rural corner of England, where many picturesque characters gather to exhibit their picturesqueness for the tourists who come down to sail. The puzzle is fun without being overly complex or deceptive, and the added twist of buried pirate treasure may evoke pleasant memories of the Famous Five. A few of the characters are not totally believable, even the ones that are not being intentionally picturesque, and I had a hard time buying into all the romantic entanglements. But a solid entry in the Tibbett series for all that.
My first CI Tibbetts book. Typical English mystery from the 1960s. A lot of detail about boating, but it was probably necessary to understand the crime(s). Chief Inspector Henry Tibbitt is on holiday with his wife, Emmy. I will read more to discover what Tibbitt is like in his work setting.
Classic, old-timer with lots of British 60s sailing info and atmosphere.
I read this book but with the title "The Sunken Sailor"
I think this was also released as The Sunken Sailor.
