Blindelings roman

The authors second novel, after his brilliant debut [Woesten]. And of course, a brilliant debut sets high expectations. Which are not immediately met. The first chapters, all chronological, all in one day, are too slow. Too slow for me, at least. But slowly and steadily the characters take form, the situation gets set, the story unfolds. In a 24-style concept (like the tv-series) every small chapter gets situated and timed.

The plot goes around a boy who's live looks dominated by all around him, be it by being overpresent or just not, by too much or not enough attention, by the absence of drama or the overwhelming presence of it. Flashbacks in his mind and reflections by all others involved show how we came to this day and of course all show more comes together in the end and no one will ever be the same afterwards.

Pyschological warfare, indifference, love, honour and conscience, the author isn't scared of the big questions in life and the human attitudes.

This author can write! Brilliant sentences, long and winding very beautiful descriptions or staccato when needed. Now and then a bit overdone? For my taste, not every noun needs an adjective, and sometimes especially in the first half of the story it slows down the reading. But the style can also make you smile, the subtle depicting of small characteristics of the protagonists, the sharp or just absolute blunt reactions in dialogues, it's a fine line for the author and he finds the balance in the rather fast evolving second part of this novel.

The final outcome is somewhat half predictable but the pieces of drama lived by all protagonists take some twists and turns.

[Woesten] did shake me up, how was it possible that this author who wrote so powerful and so beautiful had never written a novel before? And i was deeply moved by the story. This one, [Blindelings] is a very good book. But less original in characters, less surprising, maybe caused by the expectations, who knows? The concept looks well thought off, but maybe a bit in the way of the beauty of the story?
Should you read it? Yes, you should. Don't let my small remarks put you off, it is a very good book, i would give too much away if i told you more but i can tell you this: you don't want to be one of the protagonists. Not one of them. Go, find out.

Mooie zinnen, prachtig taalgebruik.

Het boek beschrijft één dag in het leven van Jonas. Aan de hand van flash backs door hemzelf, zijn vader Karel, moeder Abigaïl en ex-liefje Anouk kom je te weten hoe hun leven verliep. Jammer dat Jonas in de ik-vorm vertelt en de anderen in de derde persoon. Daardoor vond ik het persoonlijk moeilijker om me in Jonas in te leven, omdat het geforceerd, ongeloofwaardiger overkwam. De andere personages leken me "echter".
De flashbacks komen niet geforceerd over. Ze lopen telkens heel natuurlijk over van het nu naar vroeger, zoals mensen daadwerkelijk door bepaalde zaken aan vroegere momenten denken. Het is ook altijd duidelijk wie er spreekt en waar in de tijd het verhaal zich situeert. Ik kon elke keer show more goed volgen, hoewel ik ruim een maand erover heb gedaan om het uit te lezen.

Ik vond het moeilijk om het boek voort te lezen, heb het vaak weggelegd, omdat de plot na een tijdje saai werd. Ik had niet het gevoel dat de lezer onderweg "beloond" werd. Alles wordt pas op het einde bekend gemaakt. Toch heb ik voort gelezen, vooral voor de mooie zinnen die me soms deden glimlachen, voor de mooie beschrijvingen, voor de originele kijk op de dingen.

Het verhaal speelt zich af aan de kust. De vader heeft een boot. Het taalgebruik verwijst vaak naar de scheepvaart en het water, bijvoorbeeld: "Bij elkaar aanspoelende zielen"
Of: "Ze kroop tegen hem aan en ging voor anker. Zijn anker. (...) Ze ging op hem zitten, ging aan boord zeg maar, (...)"

Vader Karel doet me een beetje denken aan "Luc Hoeven" personage in "Beau Séjour", als vader van Kato, schooldirecteur op de sukkel, onbestemd figuur. Ik zag heel de tijd zijn onzeker gezicht voor me tijdens het lezen over Karel.

Drie sterren omwille van het mooie taalgebruik. Jammer van de trage plot. Maar van deze schrijver wil ik nog wel romans lezen! show less
