This imaginative adventure melds travel back into ancient times by a modern-day young woman, seeking answers to her ancestry. Enjoyable characterization and a well-crafted plot appealing more to the Tween reader than older YA.

Additional insights after my latest re-reading: I still liked the theme of Kay (the heroine) finding herself and family. Although the adventure was well-conceived, Melling's writing style had too much tell (rather than show). Some evocative detail and a less-rapid plunge into every facet of the quest would have lifted the story into a 4- or even 5-star read. Readers of the tween genre would benefit from this more sophisticated approach.

It was pretty enjoyable and interesting. I liked it more than [b:The Druid's Tune|149336|The Druid's Tune|O.R.
