La cantante calva, su primera obra de teatro, fue estrenada en el Teatro de los Noctambulos en 1950. La pieza produjo uno de esos escandalos habituales en Paris desde hace mas de un siglo. Dos anos despues, cuando Soupault, Breton y Peret vieron las obras de Ionesco, le confesaron: "Esto es lo que nosotros queriamos hacer." Puede decirse, pues, que el teatro de Ionesco es la realizacion de un anhelo colectivo, y el exito universal alcanzado prueba hasta que punto asi lo sienten las nuevas generaciones. Y es licito reconocer en la real audacia de sus anti-piezas, dramas comicos, farsas tragicas o seudo-dramas -de todas y de cualquiera de estas formas pueden calificarse sus obras de teatro-, la ruptura con la logica, la huida inexorable desde lo natural visible y la claridad de propositos. Hilarious Theater of the Absurd. Ionesco stages an English as a Second Language text into a social (mis)engagement between the Smiths, the Martins, the Smith's maid Mary & a Fireman. Would love to see it staged, which it has been, almost continuously for more than half a century. ( )
