Description

After an assassination attempt, an ex-spy must run for his life As far as the police are concerned, Charles Dennim is a zoologist, and there is no reason anyone would want to kill him. And yet, one afternoon when Dennim is working at his desk, death knocks at his door. It is the postman, and he has a package slightly too large to fit through the mail slot. He tries to force it--and triggers the bomb that lies within. When Dennim emerges from the smoking ruin of his doorway, he sees the show more innocent postman, ripped in half on his front stoop. The police are baffled, but Dennim is not--for he was once a spy.   This mild-mannered scientist spent World War II embedded deep in Nazi Germany, feeding secrets back to Great Britain. He buried that side of himself long ago, but a nameless killer has decided to dig it back up. To survive, Dennim must remember what it means to be a spy. show less

Charles Dennim hasn't got an enemy in the world. So why would someone send him a bomb in the mail? Because he is also Baron Karol von Dennim, and he once worked at Buchenwald as a Gestapo. He was actually working undercover as a British agent, but whoever is trying to kill him apparently hasn't heard that part, so Charles had better come up with a plan fast if he wants to survive.

Dennim uses the metaphor of tethering a goat to catch a tiger, and he is using himself as the bait. But he has a few tricks leftover from his wartime service, and he just might become the tiger himself.

I really enjoyed this one. I could imagine it as a very tense movie, but the book was good too. Very frustrating as I was just 40 pages from the end and things show more were really intense when I just kept getting interrupted again and again! I finally managed to get rid of all the distractions and finish the last few pages. Very good. show less
dry, but well written w an inborn sense of honor
"The story of a manhunt, a protracted duel fought in London and the English countryside by two of the most accomplished and deadly intelligence officers to have survived World War II. One of them, Charles Dennim, is a Viennese who served in the British Intelligence; the other is a dangerous fanatic who has already murdered three men." - Viking Press jacket notes.
A very good suspense thriller, worth re-reading every few years.

First words
I look back on my course of action as lunacy; and yet at the time it seemed the only way out. Pride, probably. One can never quite escape from one's ancestors.
Quotations
He was the sort of man who would unhesitatingly be lent a good horse.
Last words
(Click to show. Warning: May contain spoilers.)He drew out his right hand, bright red and dripping, and laid it on the turf between us with the last of his strength For the few seconds which were left, it was I who held it between my own.
