Victor Bayne discovers there's absolutely no trace of him online. No trace of anyone else who trained at "Camp Hell," either. Everyone he knows has signed a mysterious set of papers to ensure his "privacy." The contracts are so confidential that even Vic has never heard of them. But Jacob might have.

What other secrets has Jacob been keeping?

Another good book in the series overall, but it did have annoyances. Before my complaints, I'll go over the positive parts - Jordan's still into Victor to the point to where I realize it's a type of psychological kink thing, the humor is as funny as ever in Vic's internal monologue, there's a plot that's creatively invented (villain mixed with supernatural in a bizarre way....).

The instant messenger thing was especially hilarious.

On the negative side, there's a few things that don't make sense. I get that Vic is freaked out about his existence seeming hidden, but I don't get why he's looking to blame others who know about it for not bringing it to him. As they told him, they figured he already knew. I would in their shoes. It's not like show more they are part of a massive conspiracy against him. And he should have known and done a little research himself, it's his fault he was in the dark about it.

Second, it was totally unacceptable, ridiculous and childish that he would be inclined to storm to a retirement home where his boyfriend is investigating a vicious rape of an elderly woman to confront him there about cheating. Really, it can wait, no matter how enraged you are. There's such a thing as decency, and that was just stupid.

He's too attracted to Crash since he's supposed to be in love with Jacob, even if he is staying faithful. The only way I could consider this okay is if the author is leading up to a three way. Between Vic and Jacob, bedroom play is still steamy but growing a little repetitive and too frequent.

The end of the book is a minor cliffhanger, too - but it's not so brutal it left me upset. I'm curious about how that will lead in the next book, which is thankfully a decent length novel compared to the others.

Psycops is one of my favorite urban fantasies and Secrets if my favorite in the series thus far. Jordan Castillo Price has created a fun world, with interesting mysteries and with funny and sexy characters. Despite being urban fantasy, the characters and the setting are written in very a realistic manner and despite having a romance storyline throughout the books, the romance does not overwhelm the storyline. The setting is Chicago and unlike another of my favorite urban fantasy authors that sets his books in Chicago, Jordan Castillo Price gets Chicago right. Throughout the Psycops series there are 4 key characters. Vic is the main character who is police officer. He is extremely insecure, socially awkward, completely jealous of his show more boyfriend’s former lover yet still very endearing. Vic has an absent partner, Lisa – a very funny and loving person. Then we have Jacob, Vic’s serious boyfriend and Jacob’s partner Carolyn. Now comes the urban fantasy part of the series – Vic, Lisa and Carolyn each possess different psychic skills and as a result, are employed by police departments to assist in solving crimes. Jacob is not psychically talented but he is very much interested in people who are. Much of the series centers on Jacob dealing with his “talent”, which is seeing and communicating with ghosts, using his talent to solve a crime and the interplay of Vic’s relationship with Jacob. The strength of the series to me is the incredibly complex characters Ms. Price writes, along with the very funny humor. While reading any one book in this series I am literally laughing out loud. I highly recommend this series to anyone who loves urban fantasy, mysteries or just self-effacing humor. Below are some excerpts from Secrets I particularly liked:

(Vic commenting on the new home that he and his boyfriend moved in to and of which he spent the recent few days attempting to organize – unsuccessfully): “When I got home from work, the cannery looked like an actual dwelling instead of a warehouse that’d been organized by a nearsighted drunk.”

“A flicker of actual interest registered in the receptionist’s eyes. ‘Third floor, Detective.’ And if she noticed that Lisa was dressed in a mishmash of men’s sweats, she didn’t so much as blink over it.”

“the longer I sat there, the closer I was to trying another sip of that decaf coffee. I stood up and wondered if I was supposed to walk around and pull Lisa’s chair out for her, but she was on her feet and bussing her own tray before I even had my own chair pushed in.”

“I looked at Jacob. He was watching me. Still smiling. I did my best to telepathically scream, ‘What the hell?’ I don’t think he received it.”

“How could he do this to us? To me. To either of us. We were all in on it, all four of us. Lisa might survive women’s prison if she joined a Mexican gang. Carolyn wou8ld probably be a smear on the wall within the first week. I could squeak by if I was still good at being invisible. But Jacob would be a big trophy kill, shanked by some tough guy looking to prove himself, probably beaten and tortured first. Jesus Christ.”

“We walked more slowly carrying our steaming hot cups of coffee with their helpful warnings printed on the side.”

Warning: The book contains explicit m/m sexual scenes.

The author's note at the end pretty much sums up my thoughts on the whole jealousy thing, even though I think that Jacob has more reason to be jealous, coz he isn't the one imagining Crash naked all the time. But anyway... I didn't expect Vic to react the way he did. I mean, it's Vic; burying emotions deep down, or outright ignoring them is more his speed. But what the author said, totally makes sense. I liked that we saw something different from Vic. His outburst really shook things up. And I feel he grown as a person since the first book. Now I feel he isn't just going along with things, but taking up the reins (sometimes). He is gaining confidence.

Jacob....JacobJacob. There is a fine line between persuasion and manipulation and to me show more it felt like what he was doing is more of the latter. Then again Vic was obviously aware of what Jacob was doing and he let it happen. Hell, he even liked it. Which brings me to the sex. ............. Good job Vic! *applauds* :)

Jacob's good boy image was tarnished a bit here. He was not as professional this time, regarding the case. He simply lost his cool. Also I wondered why not just partner Vic with him, but I see now that they couldn't possibly work together. Too much distraction. :D

I'm pretty sure 80% of the book I was grinning like a lunatic. And I'm starting to like Crash, is that weird? .-.

As with the previous novels in this series, once I started reading it was hard to stop, and at the end I wanted the next one Right Now. (Must finish other books I'm reading first.) It is a joy to read an ongoing relationship that they make work not despite their pasts or failings, but because they support each other through them, though from Vic's point of view it seems haphazard. (That's Vic.) Go start reading this series!
Still loving this series. Vic and Jacob had just moved in... together. And now, Vic is freaking out about his co-workers expecting a house-warming party. He still is not really sure about disclosing his relationship with Jacob and worried about the consequences that it could bring for both of them.

Add to that that Vic just discovered that he has no online presence, at all. Neither does Camp Hell or any of the people who were there. And Jacob might know about that.

And now that we are talking about Jacob... why is he coming so late every day? What secrets is he keeping?

And there is a rapist ghost in the loose, who is predating a retirement home...

But, in the midst of all this, Vic gets to know his new partner's family and begins to warm show more up a little to him; Lisa is back, and she is talking to Vic again, Vic is getting a little less self-conscious about his relationship, and Crash is still Crash... although he seems to like Lisa, and vice versa.

Rushing now to listen to the next book in this series

I stayed up rather late reading this last night! It was a fab read. Again, I felt the beginning was a little choppy but it soon smoothes out and I really got drawn into Vic’s world.

Vic is such a cool character. He is such a bundle of insecurity and he can be just a little self absorbed. He is having a wee bit of a freak out at moving in with Jacob but he does not seem conscious of this. He just does odd things like wonder what Crash would be like in the sack, spends too long looking at him and gets antsy about getting rid of furniture. It was the whole feeling of being in a committed relationship and what that entailed that had him suffering from a wandering eye. Then there is Jacobs odd behaviour and coming in late. What Vic often show more fails to see is how much Jacob feels for him *le sigh* but he just has a hard time opening himself up to someone after being alone for so long. As a result there are a few misunderstandings and some seriously hot smexin…like had to turn down the fire in the lounge hot. Jordan, you legend!

It was so cool to have Lisa back for a cameo appearance as I really dig her character. She’s also having a wee moment dealing with the si-no and finding the training hard going. Her and Vic team up again to solve the mysterious attack on an older woman in a rest home. Vic is gaining more insight into his capabilities but the mysterious fact that he feels like there is someone watching him in the wings is beginning to bug him. Jordan spends a bit of time doing set up stuff for the next book or so, but it did not detract from the story. For me the mystery was a little tighter this time and I was so totally satisfied by the ending. Fab reading and I am really looking forward to the next one.
