This was such a mess with you head kind of book! Donna has lived in an mentally abusive relationship for six years. It starts out all roses and ends up with her doubting every move she makes. She has brought two children into the world the first out of love; the second out of rape by her husband. When Donna asksVictor in the beginning of their relationship what would happen if they didn't work out. His answer, "I'd obliterate you." And that is exactly what he does. After the judge finds in favor of Donna in regards to custody of their two children, Victor kidnaps them. As the search for her children goes on, Donna continues to struggle with all the scars from being mentally abused. She falls into actually being the abuser in her new show more relationship.
As a reader you can see what Victor is doing and it is frustrating!! I will say that it did seem to slow down a bit after the kidnapping of the children. It didn't bother me much because we see this part of an abusive victims life where they must deal with what has happened and what needs to be done to heal the wounds. Great writing and glad that I finally got to read this one. show less

The storyline may be simplistic, but don't let that stop you from reading it because the plot is enticing. You want the wife to win in the end. It depicts how insideous and deadly emotional abuse can be. Beware.
Donna and Victor were once madly in love, but after years of mental abuse, divorce is the only way out for Donna. Despite Victor's threats, Donna wins custody of their two children, but when Victor takes the children for a weekend away, Donna has no idea what nightmare has just begun.
Not as good as the cover would lead you to believe. I have read other books by this author and was always very happy with them. Maybe it's the theme of this one.
I found this book hard to put down when I got reading it. I have to say that Joy is a very good author and has written this book well. Can't wait to read another one.

Author and actress Joy Fielding was born in Canada in 1945. She received a BA in English literature from the University of Toronto in 1966. While a student, she focused on acting and was one of four stars in a student movie, Winter Kept Us Warm. After graduation, she moved to Los Angeles and appeared on Gunsmoke. Her first book, The Best of show more Friends, was published without an agent. She has written numerous novels since then including Don't Cry Now, The Deep End, The Other Woman, Missing Pieces and Now You See Her. The Periodical Distributors of Canada named her book, Kiss Mommy Goodbye, Book of the Year for 1982. She has contributed book reviews to the Toronto Globe and Mail, CBC's The Radio Show, and CBC-TV's The Journal's Friday Night.
