Description

With Joe Gunther and his Vermont Bureau of Investigation team spread thin on assignment everywhere, from the remote dairy county of Northwest Vermont to the slums of Newark, New Jersey, they're pushed to their absolute limit when a string of serial arsons across the Green Mountain State evolves into the most shocking series of murders the bucolic region has ever known.

Joe Gunther is at it again. A body is found in a burned out barn on a farm in Vermont and he is called. It turns out that the fire was one of three barn fires in recent months. Of course there's got to be a connection.

The case takes him and Willy Kunkel to Newark, NJ, whose police department has a fire with a similar MO on its books, however, no name connected with the crime. Joe and Willy make progress in Newark and track down a potential arsonist, who then goes missing.

The trail leads back to Vermont. Of course, the case is solved, but unlike many mysteries, it isn't a happy ending for many reasons. No spoiler there, though.

Archer Mayor's writing is consistently good. His stories are interesting and you just want to keep reading until show more the book is done, which is about what I did on this rainy, blah day. So treat yourself to a Joe Gunther mystery. show less
One of my favorite male detective series and this is the most interesting (so far). One of my favorite narrators (who does the voices differently and characters are easily discernible).
