Having every one of us been in bondage to sin, we readily believe that sinful things are Satanic; but do we believe equally that the things of the world are Satanic? Many of us, I think, are still in two minds about this. Yet how clearly Scripture affirms that "the whole world lieth in the evil one" (1 John 5:19). Satan well knows that, generally speaking, to try to ensnare real Christians through things that are positively sinful is vain and futile. They will usually sense the danger and show more elude him. So he had contrived instead an enticing network, the mesh of which is so skillfully woven as to entrap the most innocent of men. Watchman Nee, a martyr for his Christian faith, opens this book with a sobering definition of the world in which we live. He states that through his study of scripture, he finds that the world is hostile to Christianity because there is a mind behind the world order and that is the mind of Satan. He then proposes that all things trend toward this ruler of the world. They may start out under the Spirit of God--things such as families, businesses or great universities, but once the restraint of the divine is removed, those institutions revert in the opposite direction. For many years they may continue to be successful, but eventually their effectiveness is gone. He then deals with how we should live in our hostile show more surroundings--crucifixion, distinctiveness, lights, detachment and mutual refreshing. Many practical though difficult principles are given by which we may live victorious lives when from all sides we are pulled in the opposite direction. show less

Watchman Nee was a Chinese Christian teacher whose numerous works have been widely translated into many languages. Born in 1903, Nee became a Christian at the age of seventeen and began writing the same year. He was imprisoned by Communist Chinese authorities in 1952 and died in prison twenty years later.
