Description
The No Logo of climate change - a book that shows how global warming is not a theory we should still debate, but something that has already happened on a global scale. Climate change is not a concern for the future. It's happening right now. In this book - based on the latest scientific evidence - the author takes us around the world to show the impact of global warming already being felt in people's lives. From sand-buried houses in China to thawing Alaskan plains, the author witnesses show more some of the worst effects of climate change at first hand. Some, like the floods in the UK, are near home. Others - like the drowning Pacific island of Tuvalu - are a world away from the exhaust pipes and factory chimneys that are actually causing global warming. But this isn't simply an inventory of disaster, it's a wry look at how people around the globe are coping as their world changes at unprecedented speed. In the process, the author eats whale blubber in Alaska, swims in shark-infested waters off the Great Barrier Reef and struggles to the top of Andean peaks in Peru. An adventure with a conscience and an argument with an urgent purpose, High Tide is an extremely important book. show lessTags

This is a journalist's and a campaigner's attempt to take the abstract of the science of climate change and tell some of the stories of the people across the globe whose lives and livelihoods are being affected. First published in 2004, it is to an extent a reaction to floods in the UK in 2000 and 2002, but more examples of extremes in weather from recent years are just more examples of the same. I wouldn't say this book told me anything I didn't already at least something about, but I don't think I'll ever stop being shocked at the greed and callousness of the fossil fuel industry.

- (Click to show. Warning: May contain spoilers.)No longer do any of the places I visited seem remote. And I hope your experience of sharing them with me has illustrated just a little of why it's so vitally important - for all of our sakes - that we act now together to tackle the biggest crisis that humankind has ever faced.

(Click to show. Warning: May contain spoilers.)What's still lacking most of all is a global citizens' movement demanding that governments seriously confront the threat of climate change. And it's this citizens' movement that I hope readers of High Tide will play a part in forging. (Afterword)
