Set in the 19th century, the novel tells the story of Shim Chong, a Korean peasant girl sold into prostitution, an ordeal that takes her to China, then Taiwan, Singapore, and the Ryuku Islands. Shim Chong remains strong, learning the rites and rituals required of her and, eventually, a means of escape.

une histoire épique qui relate la vie d'une paysanne coréenne vendue comme prostituée en Chine, à Formose, à Singapour puis dans l'archipel de Ryu-Kyu, sur fond de pénétration commerciale et militaire occidentale. Cet arrière-plan forme le prétexte à de multiples rebondissements et constitue un des points forts du livre. Mais l'héroïne, forte femme qui domine sa destinée et les violences qui lui sont imposées, jusqu'à devenir une princesse avant de connaître un dernier et partiel déclassement, est un peu caricaturale. Cela ôte de sa crédibilité à l'ouvrage.
