Short biography
He graduated from Hope College in Holland, Michigan, and the University of Illinois College of Medicine.

In 1914 he married and soon became a successful physician in Western Michigan.

When Dr. De Haan got the call to preach the Gospel, he gave up his medical practice and completed training at Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Michigan.

He pastored two churches in Grand Rapids which grew rapidly under his forceful preaching and his ability to make Bible truth simple and easily understood.

Then he began large Bible classes; and in 1938, as an outgrowth of one of these classes in Detroit, the Lord led in the expansion of this teaching by means of radio. The Radio Bible Class grew rapidly and was soon on two national networks.

In more than a quarter of a century, Dr. De Haan saw the broadcast grow from a local venture on a fifty-watt station to a ministry of more than 600 selected stations around the world. During those years he spoke at many Bible conferences and wrote 25 books and numerous booklets. He also edited and published a monthly devotional guide, "Our Daily Bread."

Although I found certain parts of the book edifying, there were just too many problems for me to give a high rating. Most of the faults stem from DeHaan's dispensational reading of scripture and his desperate attempts to force certain texts to conform the events of his day (the book was originally published in 1963) to the Bible's prophetic message. Particularly outrageous was his assertion that the translation of Enoch before the Flood prefigured man's conquest of space, thus providing show more evidence that in 1963 the return of Christ was right around the corner. After all, Enoch had to zip through space in order to reach heaven, thus making him the first astronaut! So we can see that just as in the days of Noah when there was a man in space (Enoch), we have men in space also which means that God's judgement is at hand. Oh boy.
On the other hand, there is enough interesting information and a true evangelical concern in DeHaan's book to render it moderately helpful for a small number of readers. Unlike many of today's date-fixing, money-raking paper backs that litter the shelves of the Prophecy sections in Christian bookstores, DeHaan appears more sincere in his presentation, obviously loves Christ, and puts forward enough helpful material to make The Days of Noah somewhat worth while for casual reading. I also appreciated the opportunity to learn more about the faulty system of dispensationalism from a sincere source, reminding me that the kingdom of God includes many who live outside of Reformed orthodoxy.

The Chemistry of the Blood by Dr. DeHaan is an unusual and moving collection of sermons tying the science behind blood and other aspects of the material world with Biblical revelation. Dr. DeHaan writes clearly about both technical topics and the Bible, so that a novice in either may understand him. He teaches and preaches Christianity so that all may understand it. I recommend this book, although some of the science is outdated since the book was written in 1943. Also some of the Biblical show more interpretations and applications may not be agreed to by everyone; but these are twigs, minor issues, compared to the trunk of the tree, Jesus Christ. show less
de Haan's exegesis style is analogy. "This means that." This is a symbol of that, but all without warrent. The pictures from the life of Abraham are interesting, but the exegesis is not acceptable.
Every detail of the tabernacle points to some aspect of the person & work of our Saviour. The primary purpose of this book is to set forth the all-sufficient & perfect provision for redemption in Jesus. In addition the tabernacle becomes secondarily a picture of the believer.
