This is yet another incredibly beautifully illustrated books by Chris Soentpiet. I'm almost at the end of my journey of reading all his books. This fact does not bring joy. However, in reading all that I have done, it's been a fun trip.
In this book, the illustrator is also the author. Around Town is a celebration of NYC and all the things that living in a city can bring. Central park is featured with the many artists who are there to do sketches of people who request this. In addition, there show more are images street performers, small carnival type settings of a person who blows balloon shapes, then there are horse rides available, toy shops to be celebrated on the sidewalks, children can happily splash in the water from fire hydrants left open for enjoyment, people who play games outside, lots of places to eat different types of food, jugglers are right on the street performing miraculous feats of bravery, and there are places where your face can be painted.
Some may enjoy the country or small towns, but for sheer volume of things to do within a walkable space, you simply cannot beat New York City! show less

Some people are proud to live in the county and others are proud to live on a beach, this young girl just so happens to be proud of where she lives, the city of Manhattan. Through out the entire book she takes the readers through a typical summer day in Manhattan for a child. She plays in fire hydrants, she rides the horses through the city, she eats lunch with her mom, feeds the pigeons and much more. This was a cute book with realistic images capturing the essence of Manhattan perfectly.
This is a nice book that is about all of the fun things to do in a city from the perspective of a little girl. The young girl does a variety of activities in the city she lives in. The illustrations always show her mother by her side, which is good for learning safety habits. I really like the illustrations because they are life like. While I was reading the pictures helped me hear the noises and smell the aromas of the city streets. If I were reading this book to an inner city class I would show more have students share their experiences of living in a city through creating a picture of their favorite city activity including one sentence describing the picture, just like the books does. If I were teaching a suburban class I would have students do the same activity, but ask what would they most like to experience in a city. show less
Illustrates the many things one can do around town without ever going in a building.
