Casablanca: Movies and Memory by Marc Auge is a poetic excavation of the author's youth in wartime France and its aftermath refracted through memories of people, places, and movies. He throws himself into the investigation to recover his memories which flash like shards in his mind each night. He encourages his mother to talk about his early years to cross check the facts from the swirl of his memories about the many places they moved to or visited during the war. His parents were deeply in show more love, so Marc and his mother traveled around to be near his father at various army postings, or to visit relatives, or to avoid the encroachment of the Nazis. He recalls seeing Casablanca with his parents when it was released in France after the war and how they laughed at the things Hollywood got wrong while being moved at the same time. Casablanca was a very real place for the author and his family as his cousins lived there including his Uncle a French military commander and hero. Later Auge reminisces how the experience of a movie like Casablanca changes when you revisit it as your own life experience evolves such as with his own military experiences in North Africa. An anthropologist by trade Auge's prose is flowing and poetic as his memories spark both recollections as well as considerations of history and media with their power to both enhance and obscure with myth making. In his translation Tom Conley preserves both the beautiful language and elliptical nature of Marc Auge's memoir. show less
