The simple black-and-white polaroids which Robert Mapplethorpe made in the early 1970's and the luscious platinum prints of the late 1980's mark the development of a consistent and strong-willed body of work.
Along the years, his work has become more varied. His work walks a tightrope: it is hard and romantic, calculating and full of abandon, introverted and extroverted, intimate and theatrical; it dares to balance on the border of art and kitsch. Only artists are willing to take that risk.

Mostly studio shots, several gay or sado-machoistic themes. Lots of straight portraits and flowers as well. He is also interested in skin textures, especially the contrast between pale and dark. A very good collection by a justly famous photographer.
This definitive, full-color reflection of Mapplethorpe's geometric formality and underlying religiosity provides an insight into the art and career of the artist that previous black-and-white volumes cannot. An accompanying essay by Edmund White puts Mapplethorpe into historical, social, sexual, and artistic context. 100 color and duotone plates. 3 gatefolds. Slipcased.
Showcases sixty-five self portraits, many previously unpublished and culled from his earliest works, that offer insight into the photographer's complex personality and self-explorations.
