This is a lavish Handbook, of the IJN from its origin in the 1870's until the End of WWII. There are essays, and photos, and line drawings and deck plans. Simply the best of this genre of publications.

Jane's Warship Recognition Guide (Jane's Recognition Guide) by Anthony J. Watts
I read this book after my friend Jim mentioned Jane's fighting ships books to me and I couldn't afford them nor could I find anything on them so I went to the store picked up this one instead. Complete with a picture of the ship, tells you what country they are from and etc. If you really want to know your military ships better this is the book to do it.
