Short biography
Lucien Febvre was a specialist in the history of the 16th century. In 1929, he and Marc Bloch, who were friends and professors at the University of Strasbourg, established the journal "Annales d'histoire économique et sociale." They wanted this new periodical to promote a less traditional, more inter-disclipinary approach to history. The two historians favored a colloquial style and a deeper analysis of social, geographic, and economic forces. This became known as the Annales school or Annales movement.

I've wondered why there seem so be so few books on the invention and impact of the printing press. I've read The Printing Revolution in Early Modern Europe, but otherwise I've struggled finding books. Now I'm convinced scholars and authors thinking about writing a book on the subject, read this book as part of their research and just went "Why bother? This book is all I can ever hope to write on the subject, and more!"
This short volume provides an excellent overview of sixteenth-century France. The focus is not on kings and politics but on the lives typical people would have lead in this era. Febvre discusses religion, the merchant class, art, and the knowledge people sought. While I would have liked more information about some aspects, I did appreciate how much the author managed to fit into a fairly brief book.
