NO OF PAGES: 372 SUB CAT I: Islam SUB CAT II: Jerusalem SUB CAT III: Terrorism DESCRIPTION: This exhaustively researched book by a former Israeli ambassador to the U.N. (Hatred's Kingdom) reads like an informed diatribe recounting the 3,000-year history of Jerusalem, from its origins in Davidic Israel through the Islamic conquests and Crusades, to its central place in Arab-Israeli peace negotiations and global religious consciousness. While meticulously detailing the role of the Holy City in show more the evolution of Judaism, Christianity and Islam and the modern diplomatic battle for its custody, Gold is far from impartial. He displays an intense repudiation of fundamentalist Islam, and the perceived ineptitude and ingratitude of the West toward Israel, which he considers the only legitimate savior of the city. Warning of the apocalypse, he concludes that today's Jerusalem is threatened by the "evil wind" of Islamic fundamentalism; if redivided, he argues, the precious city will be the next great victim of global jihad. Comprehensive and cogent, this book may be a helpful resource to anyone interested in the historical and theological antecedents to today's political quagmire. However, the spiteful, defensive tone diminishes an otherwise fascinating history. Christians and Muslims alike will find his argument disquieting, as Gold repeatedly devalues the religious authenticity of their claim to the city.NOTES: Purchased from the Amazon MarketPlace. Refreshingly free of the usual conspiratorial tone taken by books critical of the UN. Gold, the former Israeli ambassador, argues - quite convincingly, I think - that the UN contributes to a lot of turmoil, not because of any malicious grand strategy, but rather because of a misbegotten idea that it must maintain neutrality at any cost.
I daren't read it before I go to sleep, too upsetting. At first I thought/hoped Gold was biased (against everyone who is not pro-Israel), but the evidence he provides is consistent: the UN fails to protect the weak against the strong.

Still have half the book to read, having only read about Rwanda and Srebernica so far....Another illusion gone.
A very nice compendium of damning facts. For those unaware of the collected information, this book can be quite the eye-opender. For those who are, this book can serve as excellent reference. For those who don't care, and still think the UN holds any value to mankind, a pox on you. Gold offers something of a solution to the problem that is the UN, but honestly, it's quite grim.
