Elena, Elena amore mio: Romanzo (I Libri di Luciano De Crescenzo) (Italian Edition) by Luciano De Crescenzo

Some books are admirable because they are well investigated. Some open new perspectives. Other books are just fun to read. Crescenzo’s history of philosophy: from the presokratics till the Neoplatonic’s belongs to the last category. (Though between the lines he manages to show some great erudition on the subject matter and is able to give his references.)
The book is heavily loaded with his own opinion. Crescenzo is a flamboyant life affirming Italian (yes that is a judgment easy to make show more from this history of philosophy book). The Stoics with their focus o duty, philosophers that have no humour - not his cup of espresso, so they are all bashed again and again.
Several times the ideas of philosophers are linked to Naples and it’s (famous) people. Names and customs that are unknown to me, but because Crescenzo is crystal clear about the story he is telling this is no burden. On top of that, he mixes every few chapters with a made up contemporary that lives a philosophy. An experiment is likes, though with mixed results.
The only real weaknesses of the book where his treatment of Plato, Aristotle and the neoplatonics. He is able to bring the philosophers to life in their streets, schools and gardens, but totally fails to do this for the thinkers above. Probably this is the weak side of the positive quality of this book. Telling great stories becomes hard when you go into the megalithic material that is available on Plato and Aristotle.
Another minor weakness is the 199% male focus of the book. Everybody is a man, when beauty is discussed “we” like the beauty of woman... well you get the idea. But, hé, the guy is an Italian, what can he do?
Read this book if you want a fun to read overview of all sorts of ideas (and private psychological experiments with life-‘styles’) from 600 bc till 200 ad. show less
