Not great literature, but so far sticking fairly admirably to the facts (despite its very unpromising title and execrable cover art), but Curran perpetrates an essential lie: She dissembles on B's enthusiastic affection (as she terms it) for John Edleston and other school friends and manages, through point-of-view sleight-of-hand, an astoundingly sexless Greek tour. Shameless and cowardly at once, bizarre for 2018, when the veil has been so thoroughly raised on that aspect of his life.

This first book in a trilogy based on real people and events about Ireland’s long-sought independence is full of heart and soul. It appears that the author is a descendant of some of the people in the book. This is a reluctant 5-star book, which I ordinarily save for new favorites. This one is so heartbreaking it can’t be a fave. It deserves them anyway as an excellent novel.
This is the story of Robert Emmett, the Irish revolutionary. It is historical fiction based on real people who lived in the late 1700s to early 1800s. I learned a lot about this period in Irish history from this well-researched book. Unfortunately, the Kindle version could have used additional proofreading. It contains instances of incorrect word usage, odd spaces within a word, and various sentence fragments, which I found distracting. I thought the book could have been shortened without show more losing the power of the story. I was glad the author included an epilogue to convey what happened to the many secondary characters. Overall it was a moving story marred by preventable issues. show less
