2320 The Best Years 1945-1950, by Joseph C. Goulden (read 29 Aug 1990) The years covered by this book were fabulous years for me, my senior year in high school and my college years, when I was at the height of my consciousness re public affairs. Yet much of the book was a sheer joy to read--I reveled in reading about those familiar things, seen from a 25-year perspective. Some of the accounts--for instance, on the Amerasia affair, I really didn't have a handle on. Maybe because, though I show more heard so much about it, I was determinedly 'liberal' on it. The chapter on the Hiss case is well-done. And of course the chapters on the 1948 election made me almost cry with joy. They were astounding years and it was so so enjoyable to read this not badly-done book. show less
2321 Truth is the First Casualty: The Gulf of Tonkin Affair - Illusion and Reality, by Joseph C. Goulden (read 1 Sep 1990) This is a 1969 book. It shows the Gulf of Tonkin affair was grossly mishandled. and only Wayne Morse and Ernest Gruening were right on the Resolution. It was timely reading the book when I did because we are again (September 1990) in a high crisis--and I hope we avoid lies as the time goes on.
2777 Fit to Print: A. M. Rosenthal and His Times, by Joseph C. Goulden (read 22 Aug 1995) This is the fifth book by Goulden I have read, my memory of the four previous books being very favorable. This is on A. M. Rosenthal, executive editor of the New York Times till late 1986. It is an astounding story and Rosenthal seems to be the most obnoxious person there could be. He nauseates--he had an actress mistress(Katherine Balfour) and got rid of her at the same time he divorced his wife of show more many years. How I despise the glitz and glitter A. M. revels in! The book is not well-written, but it unfailingly interesting.and raised my interest in the New York Times to new heights. The language--not all quotes--in this book is repellant. Why do intelligent people talk so foully? They must be seduced by the devil? show less
The Super-Lawyers The Small and Powerful World of the Great Washington Law Firms by Joseph C. Goulden
1252. The Super-Lawyers: The Small and Powerful World of the Great Washington Law Firms, by Joseph C. Goulden (22 Nov 1973) This is carelessly written book about big-shot Washington lawyers: Covington & Burling; Clifford, Warnke, Glass, McIlwain, & Finney; Arnold & Porter; Tommy Corcoran; Mudge, Rose, Guthrie & Alexander (really a New York firm--Nixon's old firm); and others. I said to myself I would not want to be one of those super-lawyers although it might be fun to be a little shot at a show more place like Covington & Burling. The book carps at the lawyers, but I did not agree that these guys were not entitled to practice law and make money if they can. But I was glad to be a mere Iowa lawyer--probably helped by the fact that the day before I finished the book I had won a jury case I did not expect to win. show less
