Reviews
Take two since my device went haywire and ate my last review.
This was a rough read and if I hadn't read book two of the series first years ago, I never would have read it after reading this.
I enjoyed book two of this series, but this? This was nothing but the 'hero' verbally, mentally, and physically abusing the 'heroine' throughout the entire book. And she accepted it because she was afraid of being a tavern worker her whole life.
He repeatedly called her a whore and gold digger, he was show more violently rough with and even raped her. And chapter after chapter I kept reading because I couldn't believe it could get worse, but it did.
In the end our 'hero' chalked it up to them both being stubborn?! This was just bad writng on the author's part, even for the time period. I'm now on the fence about reading book three or even rereading book two. show less

From Amazon:
Where is Lara Mayhew? Lara, a congressman's media assistant, suddenly quits her job—and disappears on the way to her Washington, DC, apartment. Novice FBI agent Meg Murray, a childhood friend of Lara's, gets a message from her that same night, a message that says she's disillusioned and "going home." To Richmond, Virginia. Meg discovers that she never got there. And bodies fitting Lara's description are showing up in nearby rivers… Could she be the victim of a serial killer? show more
My Thoughts:
The Krewe of Hunters has been one of my favorite series since the first book appeared in 2011...this is book 15. Do the math...15 books in 4 years with 2 more scheduled for release this year. It is no wonder that these books are beginning to all sound alike...the paranormal mystery is no longer a real mystery. The story line predictably goes like this...Agent has special ability... no one believes them except this like group of agents and even some of them are skeptical. The ghost helps agents solve the murder and everyone ends up with the love of their lives after a satisfying romp or two or three between the sheets. Don't get me wrong...this was not a bad story...it's just the same story. I'm still willing to give the series another go but I think it's like many long running, over published series...it either needs a fresh approach or a years or so's rest. 3 stars for the memory of what this series once was and hopefully can be again. show less

DNF. It had such potential. I am totally into enemies to lovers but this was toxic with a capital T.
The constant anger that Adrian has towards Danielle made me so uncomfortable. I mean, he's supposed to be 10 years older than her but it doesn't mean he was mature. As a child she played mean tricks on him (pepper in his wine, honey in his boot) but a man should be able to handle it. From then on his default was to immediately have violent thoughts when he saw her. The anger felt irrational in show more my opinion.
Then, for crying out loud, he walks into her room while she is bathing before the wedding and just won't leave. It felt out of place for a time period when such emphasis is put on "proper behavior" if that makes sense.
Then, raping her on the wedding night and I noped out really fast. show less

Heather Graham did a fantastic job of weaving in a romance amidst the historical events surrounding abolitionist John Brown's first shots at Harper's Ferry, his trial and hanging, and then the resultant battles immediately after the secession of the southern states and the start of the American Civil War. The heroine, Kiernan, is a stubborn supporter of the Confederacy; the man she is destined to be with, Jesse Cameron, although a Virginian himself, feels compelled to side with the show more Northerners. She refuses to love a Yankee and she fights him--and her true feelings--to the bitter end. (I kind of wanted to smack her, to be honest with you. Her demanding behavior and protestations got old.) show less
