Provocative theories supposing that there was more behind the Watergate scandals than has been revealed, specifically the break-ins were, unbeknownst to Nixon, covert CIA operations. This book is 40 years old so some new information has come to light than have made a few passages outdated (his speculation on Deep Throat’s identity is noteworthy for being wrong) so it would be interesting to see a revised edition.

This book presents what could have been an interesting ancient conspiracy narrative, but ultimately fails to deliver much. Way too much setup to the main story (roughly 50% of the book) before anything even remotely interesting starts to happen, and the ancient-secret-society-who-will-stop-at-nothing-to-silence-their-enemies ultimately fails to illicit any real sense of intrigue or emotional investment in the reader.
Reporter/detective novel meets virus thriller. The First Horseman follows the investigation of Frank Daly, a reporter, into what was meant to be a straight forward archaeological dig to research cadavers infected with the 1918 Spanish 'Flu.
Enter cover ups, a crazy religious cult, mysterious FBI agents and a deadly virus back from the dead.
It's not a terrible book, certainly passes the time in an entertaining fashion but nothing really stands out about it either. It's resoundingly average.
If show more one wanted detective/reporter story there's better books, such as Michael Connolly, and if one wanted a good virus thriller there's Richard Preston's The Hot Zone which not only is an excellent story but is also true. That's true as in non fiction, not true as in "based on a true story". show less
