The strangest thing happened to me while I was reading this book.
I literally became obsessed about a book about Obsession.
I adore Philip Ridley - he has been my favourite author since I read Meteorite Spoon when I was 12.
This isn't my favourite book of his, and all of his books have struck me deeply, and are brilliant in their own special way.
I have often spent sleepless nights finishing books that I couldn't possibly tear myself away from, but the singular feeling I experienced while show more reading this one was and to this day remains unprecedented. It went to my head! It is one of the books which I promised to myself I wouldn't re-read out of the fear of having that peculiar state of mind evaporate into nothingness. It would be crushing!
I'm not sure if I'd recommend it, chance is, if you are a fan of Philip Ridley's, you have already read it, but if you aren't, I'd recommend reading other more plot-driven books of his. I seem to recall that there weren't many developments in that direction.
I had a mind to give it four stars - compared to other books of his I adored, that is, but due to my personal experience with it it definitely deserves five. show less

This was a dizzying read at times. If I’m honest the number of explicit sex scenes were too much for me even as I recognize the wish fulfillment aspects of the narrative. I think my younger self would have really enjoyed the narrative experimentation. My current self had to buckle up and go with it, but in the end I’m glad to have read it. What a whirlwind!
An interesting new fairytale of sorts. The world is all around strange and surrealistic but the characters are as dear to the heart as those classics we've grown up with. I reccomend this for all lovers of fairytales, steampunk, and a good story.
I read this as I had seen the stage production with a friend's daughter performing. It's a book for children, primarily boys, about a small boy called Ruskin who is bullied, and who wants to be a hero.
There's a large and vicious alligator who lives in the sewers,, several caricatured adults (including Ruskin's rather sad parents and his teacher) and a bully who breaks windows and sleep walks. Given his environment, Ruskin is quite well-balanced. His only friend is the school caretaker.
The show more writing is good and there's plenty of action. One rather disturbing event near the end, and some scenes that could be scary for sensitive children. But for newly-fluent readers of about eight and up, who like action-based books, this could be a good choice.
