Stand Up, Shake Hands, Say How Do You Do: What Boys Need to Know About Today's Manners by Marjabelle Young Stewart
Stewart's “Stand Up, Shake Hands, Say How Do You Do” was a surprising hit with the kids last year. We found the book at a used book store and were impressed with the simplicity and clarity of the advice. Some details might be too formal for most occasions, at least for the average family. However, the timeless value of the principles instilled in this little book will give any child, especially boys, the tools to be successful and stand out amongst their peers. Come for the standards of show more polite behaviour and manners, and stay for the surprisingly witty humour. Very fun and helpful resource for little ones learning how to act a little less like savages. show less
This is a simple book on manners written in 1965. While some of the instructions seem old fashion, most are relivant regardless of time. We may not have maids that serve our meals, but not talking with your mouth full is good manners today as well as 50 years ago. Instructions on basic introductions, good table and phone manners, parties, going out to restaurants and movies, and general social interactions are all covered.
Like all books such as this, it's an excellent resource. But most show more children will learn their manners from parents, not a book. For me, it reminded me of the basics that my mother sought to teach me and how I've let myself slide a bit as grew. This was a refresher course for me, and I recommend it to anyone looking for the same thing. show less

Already out of date when I read it, but it went with the class that my mom put me in. I enjoyed the class, though. Still have the book with Marjabelle Stewart's obituary tucked inside it from a newspaper clipping. I no longer have the white gloves, though. In fact, I don't think I ever had an occasion to wear them.
