This is another of those books that are fun to leaf through, skim, pause, return to.
This book captures views of America from 1850 to 1890, a period when there was a great hunger for pictures of places and events. Although photography had been invented, there was no way by which images could be printed in the popular press until 1890 when Stephen Horgan developed the halftone plate. The process of wood block engraving was developed into a fine art, and quickly filled the pages of Harper's, Leslie's and other weekly magazines. This book contains over 500 pages of prints along show more with accompanying contemporary text. show less
A great book showing the evolution of different designs. If you are a designer who likes seeing variations on geometric design, this is a great foundation book.
Mostly steel-engravings from popular pictorial magazines at to time. Each engraving is accompanied by historical information.
