- Liu Wu-Chi has studied and taught both in China and the United States. The author of more than ten books, he is also a regular contributor to Chinese and English periodicals. He was a visiting professor at Yale University and is at present Professor of Chinese Language and Literature and Chairman of the Department of East Asian Languages at Indiana University. Wide-ranging collection with excellent notes, but the translations are by and large boring and academic.
i am not excited by many if not most of the translations, and i do not know enough about chinese poetry to say how good the selection is but i found many wonderful poets/poems here. Han Yu's Pond in a Bowl, Five Poems (盆池五首) alone is worth the price of the book! And there are old men boasting of their gumption (?) who remind me of rappers! And if you read Chinese, the originals can be bought in a separate book (if it is available)
For anyone who reads Chinese or Japanese (for if one reads well, it is possible to catch alot of the Chinese) should have this book to accompany "Sunflower Splendor." With POD printing now it could be sold for $15/copy and a publisher would still profit.
