About the Author

Nazim Hikmet was born in Salonika. After participating in the Struggle for National Independence, he taught school for a brief period and then studied economics and sociology in Moscow (1922--34). After returning to Turkey, he worked as a journalist and in a film studio. He was in continual trouble show more with the Turkish authorities during the thirties because of his adherence to communism, and in 1938 he was sentenced to a 20-year term in prison. Released in 1950---partly because of world opinion---he left Turkey and lived in exile until his death in 1963. Hikmet's poetry (he also wrote plays) represents a complete break with the traditional heritage and a full acceptance of occidental models. Much of his work was inspired outside of Turkey and reached a universal dimension; nevertheless, the land and people of Turkey figure prominently as sources of inspiration. He has been especially well received in France via translation. Ironically, most of his work has appeared in Turkey only since his death. (Bowker Author Biography) show less

The oft imprisoned, eventually exiled Turkish poet, Hikmet's poetry softly opposes and defies his punishments. Loves, wifes, friends, the act of poetry, usually wins over his loyal communism. Even in translation, these poems deserve top shelf respect.

I purchased this book after reading a letter written by Che Guevara in which he quotes a poem by Nazim Hikmet. This volume of selected poetry by the Turkish Marxist poet is full of emotion. Love, devotion, perseverance, defiance, longing, pride, loyalty. The pain of separation is displayed throughout the work. From his wife. From his country. A great contribution to world literature. Any lover of poetry should not pass this up.
A collection of poetry from the Turkish communist poet, Nazim Hikmet. Over all, much poetry on prison and Turkey, which gives another cultural perspective, although I wonder if anyone reads him anymore even among the few readers of poetry.
My personal favorite will probably always be "On Living"
(Living is no laughing matter:
you must live with great seriousness
like a squirrel, for example--
I mean, without looking for something beyond and above living
I mean living must be your whole life...)
