This is one of the best Russian history books I have ever read. It covers a very important period in Russia, the 17th century when Russia was very gradually opening up to foreign influence and on the brink of reform. This is an obscure but fascinating period in Russian history yet this author's meticulous research brings us a very clear picture of traditional Russian society at that time. Sophia was the first woman to rule Russia and her reign has been much overshadowed by her half brother show more Peter the Great who followed her. Given the prevailing attitudes to women, it was almost a miracle that Sophia governed Russia at all. A dynastic crisis left Russia with no mature male heir. Sophia's brother Ivan was of age but mentally handicapped and in poor health. Peter was a mere child. Sophia became Regent and was clearly a remarkable and intelligent woman and this book highlights her many achievements and her ultimate downfall when her brother Peter seizes the throne. show less
Started reading it but I couldn't get interested based on how it's written. I love this piece of history and have several other books about the Romanovs. I'm putting it away for now and will try to pick it up later.
