This one doesn't really work, unfortunately. There's a lot of opportunity for an author to add material to a novelization of a two-part story, but for some reason, nothing Eric Pringle adds in really does the trick. The book is fairly dull and slow, and you don't finish it feeling you have a better understanding of the story or the characters than you got in the original TV serial. Nerys Hughes isn't a bad narrator at all, and the end result is certainly listenable, but I wouldn't recommend show more this installment to any but the most interested consumer. Try one of the William Russell or Geoffrey Beevers-narrated titles instead. show less

Often the novelisations of two-part stories bring new material and imagination to the narrative, and I thought at first that this was going to be one of those, with good introductory description (especially of Jane Hampden, one of the great companions who never was). However, the pace isn't really sustained, and the plot sinks under its own flaws; notably, Pringle misses the opportunity to make something more of the Malus's physical appearance on show more the page, and the whole thing ends up essentially as a cut-down version of The Dæmons. show less
