For whatever reasons, for me, David Higgins seems to transcend the limitations of this particular Osprey series; maybe because his subject choices are a little bit different. So, besides the context and development of the Cromwell and Jagdpanzer IV, one gets a fair amount of background on the relevant elements of the British 7th Armoured Division, the Polish 10th Cavalry (still commemorated in the contemporary Polish army), the German Panzer-Lehr Division and the Waffen-SS 12th Panzer show more Division. Finally, one winds up with an overview of these units in the "bocage" fighting in Normandy. Higgins also thoughtfully provides his bibliography. show less
This title really fell flat for me. The art is excellent but the text while I was expecting it to be perfunctory just didn't flow very well nor did I find it all that educational. A shame really.
Seeing as the tank-on-tank actions of the Great War can be counted on one hand, much of this booklet is devoted to matters of tank development and what it took to raise the units that took these machines into action; recommended.
What you see is basically what you get, as the operational action described is essentially that of the 503rd SS Heavy Tank Battalion against the Soviet onslaught in Pomerania in the Spring of 1945; there is rather more perspective from the German than the Soviet side.
