Dieter Kühn (1935–2015)

I have to admit, when I read this book, being completely unfamiliar with the author, I imagined it to be an endearingly odd work of a young amateur writer. The plot is creative and surreal, but lacks a certain depth. A scientist embarks on an expedition to the remote castle of a "sound vampire". In the course of the story, he observes the strange events caused by the vampire's quenchless thirst for sound. That's pretty much it as far as the actual story goes. Naturally, the story's focus on show more sound allows for some onomatopoeic descriptions that add a little colour to the whole setup. Unfortunately, the author didn't use this opportunity to delve into contemplating the nature or meaning of sound. He stays close to the surface of things. The Book's strongest part imo is a scene at the beginning, in which a "wall of sound" is described that surrounds the castle, reminiscent of the effects of bow shocks in astrophysics.
All in all an entertaining read, although with a certain juvenile feel to it. show less

Eines meiner ersten Bücher - bei meinen Eltern wieder aufgetaucht. Zwei der drei Protagonisten aus dem antiken Morgenland verdienen als Kinder ihr Geld damit, in einer Schreinerei zu helfen, der dabei zu betreuende Leimkessel war mir über die Jahre in Erinnerung geblieben. Die Geschichte vereint fantastische mit technischen Elementen, auch 40 Jahre nach ihrem Erscheinen eine gute Kombination (vom Sprachstil her kann der Text sein Alter aber nicht verbergen, vom Inhalt her ist er zeitlos).

Der einzige lebende deutschsprachige Autor, den ich bisher immer blind gekauft habe. Aber dieses Buch gefällt mich nicht so sehr. Das mag an seinem Protagonisten liegen, den ich sowieso nicht besonders sympathisch finde. Normalerweise habe ich keine Zeit für Romane, in denen zusammengesuchte Fakten in eine "spannende" Handlung verpackt werden, und ich erwarte von diem Autor immer etwas besonderes.... . Also: dieses Buch ist kein MUSS!
