Short biography
José Argüelles, born Joseph Anthony Arguelles Rochester, Minnesota January 24, 1939 – March 23, 2011), was an American New Age author and artist. He was the founder of Planet Art Network and the Foundation for the Law of Time. He held a Ph.D. in Art History and Aesthetics from the University of Chicago and taught at numerous colleges, including Princeton University, the University of California, Davis, the San Francisco Art Institute, and Evergreen State College. As one of the originators of the Earth Day concept (due in part to the influence of astrologer Dane Rudhyar), Argüelles founded the first Whole Earth Festival in 1970, at Davis, California. He is best known for his leading role in organizing the 1987 Harmonic Convergence event, for inventing (with the assistance of his wife Lloydine) the perpetual Dreamspell calendar in 1992, and for the central role that he played in the emergence of the 2012 phenomenon. Towards the end of his life, Argüelles focused on issue of consciousness, elaborating the concept of a noosphere (based on the work of Teilhard de Chardin and Vladimir Vernadsky) as a global work of art. Specifically, he envisioned a "rainbow bridge" encircling the Earth.

In The Mayan Factor: Path Beyond Technology, Jose Arguelles announces that human history has been shaped during the time framed by the Mayan Calendar Great Cycle-3113 b.C. to A.D. 2012-by a galactic beam through which the Earth and Sun have been passing. We are informed that the cycles of Earth cultures follow 'gallactic seasons' which have been described mathematically and symbolically by the Mayans. And we learn that each person is empowered to connect directly-sensuously and show more electromagnetically-with the energy-information of this beam emanating from 'the galactice core.' Since astrophysicists are currently describing density waves or beams that sweep through the galaxy and influence galactic evolution, Arguelles' synchronisitc discovery of the Mayan Calendar beam is prophetic. This deep and adventurous book will have to be carefully read and pondered to understand the cycles here on Earth revealed in the Calendar. This is a profound shift in conscousness which involves viewing time and evolution from a multi-shift in consciousness which involves viewing time and evolution from a multi-dimensional perspective. The Mayan story is unfolding as a spectacular galactic tale whose punchline is looming into view, and August 16 to 17, 1987 is the shift point into the last 25 years of the galactic beam. the Mayan Factor not only presents a new persepctive on ourselves and our planetary existence,it is also one of the major keys to a new science, The Path Beyond Technology. 'Like Teilhard, Arguelles sees a coming moment of profound discontinuity. History has been an ordering principle, encoding information into the psi bank. We are now at the end of history. The psi bank itself-our accumulated knowledge-is about to become consciously articulated.'-Marilyn Ferguson, author of The Aquarian Conspiracy 'At last someone with the right blend of vision and scholarship has had the courage to tackle the mystery of the Maya head-on. Jose Arguelles has asked the right questions and has come up with answers that astound. His research is impressive, his findings hard to refute, his conclusions persuasive; Furthermore, they are timely. As the reader will discover, the mystery and message of the Maya have been unriddled in the nick of time.'-Peter Rogers, author of A Painter's Quest; Art as a Way of Revelation Artist, poet, and visionry historian, Jose Arguelles, Ph.D., is co-author of Mandala and The Feminine, Spacious as the Sky; and author of The Transformative Vision; Reflections on the Nature and History of Human Expression; and Earth Ascending: An Illustrated treatise on the Law Governing Whole Systems. He is currently a core faculty member and program coordinator of the Creative arts for the Union Graduate School. He lives in Boulder, Colorado.

Arguelles compares the ancient Mayan calendar with the I Ching (ancient Chinese divination system), the great pyramid in Egypt, and the sequence in human DNA to come up with predictions for the enlightenment and change of mankind. Profusely illustrated with diagrams, charts, and line drawings, Arguelles shows how his theory works. There is also a bibliography of works consulted.
