I do not generally read biographies because I never come away feeling it was worth the time. I LOVED THIS BOOK. I was surprised at how insightful and introspective RuPaul is about his life and navigating through life's challenges. I found his story charming, while also facing many struggles. Reading it was an emotional experience that I found very rewarding. I think his personal values are very well reflected in his art and I am happy to be along for the ride.
Written about 25 years ago from present day. This is RuPaul just as she was making a name for herself. Long before RuPaul's drag race or any of the other things that she's done since the millennium. Shortly after the club kid craze and her launching herself on the world as Supermodel of the World. She does have a positive joyful attitude throughout the book and starts off with her childhood and goes forward. Several photos where you wonder what she was thinking at the time lol.
Everyone has a right to their own story, but I was hoping for so much more from this memoir. It felt like it was a rehash of therapy sessions. I hold no judgment for the self destructive behavior, but RuPaul’s life has been so much more than that. I would have appreciated more about his fashion, and his interactions with designers, supermodels and his own design work. He gave us only scant details on that and on his music recording as well.
I went into this memoir thinking it would be a fun celebrity romp. It’s more serious and thoughtful, more countercultural than I expected. And fun too, what with the dresses made of gold shower curtains.
