This is a badly written book about a brave and inspiring woman. The flippant writing, meant, I suppose, to show off the wit and flair of the author, was a bore to wade through and did not do justice to his subject matter.
Question: How is it that after we learn she marries a Brit and moves to England, not one word is mentioned about her husband again until the end when we learn in a postscript that he died while she was imprisoned The poor man simply ceased to exist.

A small but perfectly formed book which makes me cry every time I read it. Though somewhat romanticised it gives such a beautiful view of what humans are capable of if the value decency, love and peace and their piece of earth above war and greed and pride.
This is a wartime story set on a fictional Channel Island. I have a beautiful hardback edition, which means I read it carefully in one place (instead of carrying it around with me as I do my ereader) and therefore took much longer than I would have expected. I also had a long break from it in the middle, so I suppose that means I didn't find it that compelling.
Solid, if unspectacular. A good read about the truly amazing pilots and operatives who flew in and out of Europe in tiny unarmed planes and landed in the dark in fields.
