Questo romanzo inizia con quello che probabilmente è il sogno di moltə: Ante Valdemar Roos vince alla lotteria una somma che gli permette di mollare il suo lavoro e di comprarsi una casetta nel bosco. A differenza di altre famiglie, però, non ci si trasferisce con moglie e figlie per evitare il logorio della vita moderna, ma se la tiene per sé e vi si reca ogni giorno invece di andare a lavorare.

Abbiamo quindi un perfetto esempio di impiegato modello che tuttə reputano la quintessenza show more della prevedibilità e della noia e che invece ha una doppia vita di cui nessunə è a conoscenza. Una doppia vita che non prevede chissà quali trasgressioni, solo di passare del tempo in santa pace in quelle che dovrebbero essere le sue ore produttive.

Ovviamente le cose non andranno esattamente come pianificate dal nostro Valdemar, ma la domanda che serpeggia lungo tutto il romanzo è: com’è una vita degna di essere vissuta? Cosa bisogna fare perché la vita abbia un senso? Niente nella vita di Valdemar sembra poter dare una risposta a queste domande che accompagnano l’essere umano da tempo immemore, almeno finché un incontro non gli darà la possibilità di riempire di significato la sua esistenza.

Per circa metà, L’uomo con due vite non sembra nemmeno un giallo: Nesser si prende tutto il tempo per tracciare il contesto che darà la svolta drammatica a questa storia. Una storia così fuori dal consueto che chi si troverà a indagare sulla vicenda si immaginerà scenari molto lontani dalla realtà e fino alla fine non saprà bene che pesci prendere. L’ho trovato proprio un bel romanzo, forse adatto anche a chi di solito non ama i gialli, e penso proprio che leggerò altro di Nesser. show less

I've rarely enjoyed a police procedural as much as I did this one. A man is killed, violently, while sleeping off a drunken night out, in his bed. His wife finds him and will a little delay calls the police. Who could have done it? The doors were unlocked, but that was typical. Nothing was taken, and the violence suggests something personal. Munster starts investigating the friends, the family, and any other connections he can find. It's as if he's pulling up a whole rotten tangle of ropes show more and weeds long drowned in the canal. Ante Valdemar Roos is 59 and bored with his life. He has worked for the same company for most of his life and lives with his wife and two stepdaughters, all of whom seem to ignore him. His most treasured memories are of time spent with his father in the woods and when Roos wins on the pools he decides to make changes. Without telling his wife he quits his job and buys an isolated cabin in the woods, every day he sets off for work as normal but spends the day in quiet contemplation until one show more day he finds a stranger has taken up residence. Anna is 21 and has run away from an addiction centre and an abusive relationship. She and Roos find companionable comfort in a strange friendship until one day Anna’s crazy ex catches up with her.
This book is a real slow burn. Roos is an engaging and curmudgeonly character who spends the first half of the book being introduced and developing his odd double life. The second half of the book suddenly becomes a murder investigation with the team of Barbarotti and Backmann, quirky detectives in pursuit of the truth. This half is also incredibly satisfying and the final act is given a little bit of uncertainty because that just seems right. show less

Cambia l'investigatore protagonista, non cambia l'inimitabile stile di Nesser, che scrive un noir intricato e fortemente psicologico, dove l'elemento caso e l'elemento sadismo si legano inestricabilmente nella vicenda di uno zio e di un nipote scomparsi e uccisi.
I due casi, apparentemente legati a causa dei legami familiari tra i due assassinati, descrivono invece due diverse sfaccettature di quella società scandinava che, vista da vicino, si fa di giorno in giorno più degradata e show more infelice.
Imperdibile la strampalata contabilità inventata dal protagonista per stabilire l'esistenza o meno di Dio. show less
