Theo Thijssen (1879–1943)

The main character Kees Bakels is known for his odd swimming pool stride, which is wonderfully described and has become quite a concept in Dutch art, as it decades later returns in music, in movies, on theatre-stages and in literary stories. However, this happens in the first pages of the book. Theo Thijssen gives the reader a look in to thoughts and fantasies of the ten year old Kees Bakels, even in 2017, almost 100 years after publication, Thijssen's writing still succeeds to get into the show more heads of the reader, and both the very young and the older readers, who are now in their seventies, are moved by his thoughts and the events.

We learn what Kees thinks he will say to the mother of the girl he secretly is in love with, when he has the honour to open the door of the school building for the girl and her mother. The effect is stunning. We get to read Kees' thoughts and have our own associations and emotions, and maybe our own fantasies and when in our sixties re-occurring memories, soon however, reality kicks in, and we read how the real world is abruptly different from his what Kees hoped for...

The book is about a young boy looking for attention and acknowledgement of his potential and hidden qualities. And let's be honest, who didn't, or maybe who doesn't – even today when you're fifty or sixty, don't give up on yourself. Heartbreaking are the scenes when the father in the family gets really ill. Tuberculosis - in the end deadly. Family dynamics and how parents treat children or want to keep the dramatic shit away from kids - which of course never works. Today parents still do the same, far too often. While reading the book, more than once I had a tear rolling down my cheeks and quite a few times I laughed out loud.

There are not too many books that still work after one hundred years, everyone will be able to find their own memories of our young lives in this book and young people of today will be able to feel their emotions in these family affairs and understand the dreams of their own potential. Although this book starts out rather slow, it slowly transforms in an analytical novella about the “spirit” of a class. Has some adorable and insightful moments. A tamer but more philosophical and mature version of Meester Jaap.

Kees de jongen was long on my wish list as it is a classic of common people's literature, describing youth in Amsterdam around 1900. It was written by a great educator of that time, Theo Thijssen.

Very enjoyable to read, showing an optimistic view for common people at that time, and offering glimpses of Amsterdam as it was 125 years ago.

Ik had De gelukkige klas van Theo Thijssen vorig jaar gekregen van mijn leraar Nederlands om onze literatuurlijst mee te vullen. Het waren boekjes die nog over waren van de actie 'Nederland leest 2007'. Het heeft een tijdje in de kast gestaan, maar nu wilde ik wel weer eens iets lezen voor mijn literatuurlijst en toen kwam ik weer bij dit boek.

Het is het dagboek van een schoolmeester, meester Staal, die les geeft aan de vierde en vijfde klas van een armenschool in Amsterdam. Hij show more vertelt hoe hij lesgeeft aan zijn klas, en over de leerlingen. Dit verhaal speelt zich een tijd geleden af. Maar toch zijn de problemen nog niet helemaal anders dan de problemen tegenwoordig.

Ik ben positief verrast door dit boek. Ik had er niet zoveel van verwacht, eerlijk gezegd. Maar het was een aardig boek. Het was prettig geschreven, ondanks het feit dat het al behoorlijk oud was. Er waren natuurlijk wel een heleboel dingen die tegenwoordig heel anders zijn. Zo kan ik mij nu niets voorstellen bij alle mensen die moesten ophouden met school na de basisschool, en hoe speciaal het was als die leerlingen een andere taal mochten leren. Da's tegenwoordig gelukkig heel anders. Maar aan de andere kant kampt Steel met opdrachten die hem van bovenaf worden opgelegd om het onderwijs te 'verbeteren'. En daar klagen de leraren die ik heb nog steeds over, en koppig houden ze vol aan hun eigen ideeen, net als Steel. show less
