A large (and heavy) collection of beautiful colour photographs of eighty of the world's most interesting buildings, in two parts - from before and after the year 1500. All the photographs have been specially taken for this book and are accompanied by an intelligent text which is accessible to non-specialists.
This is a gorgeous book with stupendous photographs of a signficant selection of major building in the world. The author is a renowned photographer and has captured beauty in many places. One could get the opinion that the era of great building is almost closed with only a few representatvies from the last 100 years such as Philip Johnson's Glass House in New Canaan, Conecticut, and the abbey chapel at Notre-Dame du Haut in Ronchamp, France by LeCorbusier.
The pictures for me of the great show more Gothic Cathedrals are striking, particularly those of Ely Cathedral. Also notweorth are mosques, such as the Süleymaniye Mosque in Istanbul. But, almost every page is a feast for the eyes. The book is divided into two sections, buildings before and after 1500 and most are from Europe or the Near East. However, you can start anywhere in the book, and enjoy it the 357 color photographs. show less
