1961 Clemenceau, by Geoffrey Bruun (read 29 Nov 1985) This book is one in the series called "Makers of Modern Europe." It makes no pretence to definitivity. Clemenceau was born in the Vendee in a village called Mouilleron-en-Pareds on 28 Sep 1841 . He studied medicine and became a doctor, but did not practice much. He was mayor of Montmartre in Paris in 1870-71, municipal councilor 1871-1876, in the Chamber of Deputies from 1876 to 1893--kind of a gadfly and wrecker of ministries; 1893 to show more 1902 he was a newspaper columnist; back in office as a Senator 1903-1906; minister and Premier 1906; in opposition 1909-1914; in late 1917 he became Premier and continued as such till 1919; he was denied the Presidency in 1920; and died in 1929. This book was written too soon after his death to have judiciousness, but I found it worth reading. show less

4496. Europe and the French Imperium 1799-1814, by Geoffrey Bruun (read 13 Oct 2008) This is a volume in the series edited by William L. Langer called "The Rise of Modern Europe." It is the seventh volume in that series I have read. Since it was published in 1938 it is somewhat dated and it would, I think, be better to read a more recent study on the momentous years covered by the volume. It started out to be quite engaging, but plodded some towards the end. The author was born in Montreal, show more Canada, but was a history professor in the U.S., dying at age 89 in 1988 show less
