This does NOT read like a novel. There is some very good description, and a lot of lengthy philosophizing on the role of a nurse in hospitals. The question is how much has changed in almost 40 years?
Hanging on to this one. Learned about Cystic Fibrosis patients and the percussion technique (gently slapping the ribs in back to help release mucus and help patents to cough).
My Dad broke his collarbone and was in too much pain to cough up an enormous loogie and I was all distressed, fluttering around wishing I could help. Suddenly I remembered this book, gave his back a couple of pats, and voila! My patient, free of the offending wad of mucus, was resting comfortably and I felt like a super show more heroine from the library. show less

Sometimes I pick up a book for its cover. The line "Doctors don't keep you alive. I do." was compelling enough for me.
