A helpful one-stop-shop for the variety of books called gospels (and accepted as sacred by one or another of the many competing varieties of early Christianity) in Antiquity.
Note: These books are called gospels not as a value judgment about their spiritual worth, but because they were called gospels by their ancient copyists and readers.
This book is one of the few contemporary translations of many of these texts. A useful reminder that the past was not tidy or pat.
(For the technical version show more of this sort of collection, see the New Testament Apocrypha: Gospels and Related Writings by Wilhelm Schneemelcher and R. M. Wilson. For a vividly opinionated earlier version of this sort of collection see The New Testament Apocrypha by M. R. James, scholar (and superb ghost story author.))

Rev. and expanded ed. The book presents all 20 of the known gospels from the early Christian era, offering a fuller picture of early Christian origins. Each offers fresh glimpses into the world of Jesus and his followers, including: The Gospel of Thomas, Gospels of Mary, Sayings Gospels Q, Signs Gospel, Secret Book of James, and the Gospel of Peter.
This is a scholarly debate over this topic lead by eminent personnalites having contributed to the "Jesus Seminar".
Very good for those who want to have some glimpses on who was the historical Jesus, and what he did.

Contains all twenty of the known gospels from the early Christian era. Commentary on all of the gospels offers a fuller and more fascinating picture of early Christianity than the four canonical gospels alone.
