Startlingly beautiful aerial photography of various mountain ranges in the US. Collier's theme is geology, which makes this book kind of special, a different from just a bunch of pretty pictures.

The text includes an abbreviated introduction to geology and mountain building. It has a nice structure where different tectonic regimes are defined briefly, and then followed by photographs from these regimes as the exist in the lower 48 states and Alaska.

The text is limited. I was left wishing show more for fuller descriptions of the geology and other aspects of each picture. But that's a mixed criticism; it's beyond the scope here, and it points out that the pictures got me thinking. The photography is highlight. show less
The Geography on my doorstep has always interested me. Now I have an understanding of it.
