Hugo Gernsback and the Century of Science Fiction (Critical Explorations in Science Fiction and Fantasy) by Gary Westfahl
While apparently meant to be a more cohesive study what you're essentially left with after the editorial slicing and dicing is a collection of the author's writings about Gernsback and his accomplishments in the field, as such it's more a book you dip into rather than read cover to cover. That said the essays dealing with Gernsback's legacy as an editor & publisher struck me as being more interesting then those dealing with the man's efforts as an author.
Scathing indictment of sf lit crit and lit crit in general. Very good.
Love it! A fascinating collection that I read cover to cover. An incredible collection of quotes from written work of all kinds, films, and television. (And I love the fact that the author gives credit for the film and tv quotes to the writer - not the actor speaking the lines.) Arranged alphabetically by dozens of fairly broad topics (Weapons, Sex, Nature, Humor, Impossibility, Survival - lots more).
