A collection of previously unpublished stories, Nameless Places is largely a mediocre affair despite the inclusion of big names like Carl Jacobi, Lin Carter and Ramsey Campbell. Still, a few of the pieces are memorable: "The Real Road to the Church" by English horror surrealist Robert Aickman (an excellent foretaste of his own collection Cold Hand in Mine, published later in 1975); Arthur Byron Cover's eerie "Lifeguard," which could almost be mistaken for Night Shift-era Stephen King; and show more Robert E. Gilbert's "Walls of Yellow Clay," a fascinating, disquieting study of mental disintegration in the guise of a sci-fi yarn.
Long out of print (like most of the Arkham House catalog), and probably not worth tracking down for the casual horror/sci-fi reader. Tim Kirk's beautiful jacket illustration makes it a desirable item for collectors, however. show less

Definitely biased by the fact that I had read most of the better stories in the past. Otherwise ho hum. There is one story, The Day it Rained Lizards, that has so much potential for weirdness and psychological insight, but is so poorly written, that it’s all but ruined.
