The stop-start somewhat rambling presentation of this twice fictionalized account of a young Norwegian born son of Pakistani immigrants jailed for associating with terrorists takes a while to become accustomed to. That it is translated into English probably adds to the distance the reader from the narrator and his experiences in Norway, Syria, and back in Norwegian prison. Enfolded within, I found more evidence that those leaders focused and driven enough to be active rebels are rarely the show more sort of men who work well with others. show less
This is not an easy book to read, and like other books that make us uncomfortable, it should be read. Based on a real man’s life, This Life or the Next, tells the fictional account of a Pakistani Muslim raised in Norway. As he becomes more involved with his religion, he decides he must become a jihadist and fight in Syria. Yet when he arrives, he finds much more to consider and learn than he knew of in Norway. He’s not an easy protagonist to like, and yet he shows us his compassionate show more side as he helps a Syrian who drives an ambulance. This would make a good book for a serious discussion group. show less
Anbefales. show less
Engaging writing. Good overview of the conflict and its difficulties.
