I don't care for baseball, so at first I was unsure if I would enjoy Miko Kings, but my curiosity got the best of me and I had to read it just to see what LeAnne Howe had created. I was quite surprised by the level of intricate storytelling that I found. Miko Kings is not a simple story about baseball, there is time travel, Choctaw etymology, and a history lesson all rolled up inside. LeAnne Howe took all the facts and information she could find about the history of Ada, baseball, and the show more Dawes Commission, wove them all together with Choctaw language, and created a shockingly vivid story with very full characters. Miko Kings was a fascinating journey and LeAnne Howe is a fantastic writer! show less
A very intriguing story made more so by interesting shifts in narrative and some well placed post modern additions. Some predictable events and a bit of uninspired dialogue here and there don't mar the overall story that much. Decent read with spots of profundity.
When the Light of the World Was Subdued, Our Songs Came Through: A Norton Anthology of Native Nations Poetry by Joy Harjo
A book of poetry from poets with uniquely distinct voices. Many of the poems break new ground for me - expanding my perspective and exposing me to new ideas. I am enjoying taking bites out of different sections and nibbling at the huge range of authors...[in progress]
Oh my gosh this book was just absolutely gorgeous and incredible. The intertwining stories were just incredible--and easy to follow, which is something I often struggle with when reading books like this. But this was not only so clear and connected but it also was just so beautifully crafted? There were so many beautiful, beautiful lines and I blew through it so quickly because I just could not put it down. Such a gorgeous, amazing book, and I want so many other people to read it.
