After 15 pages of introductory text, the rest of the book is quality reproductions of Catlin's portraits of members of various Indian tribes, painted from life on expeditions of the 1830s. Catlin was self-trained as a painter, and it sometimes shows in unrealistic body proportions; But these pictures are still important documentation of Indian life and dress in those times.
Catlin was trained in the law and practiced for a while before throwing it all up for full-time painting. His interest show more in Indians was probably from his mother's tales of her captivity by the Indians in the Wyoming (PA) massacre of 1778!
He was a distant cousin of mine.
