Author of The Doré Illustrations for Dante's Divine Comedy
About the Author
Paul Gustave Doré (January 6, 1832 to January 23, 1883) was a French artist, engraver, illustrator and sculptor. Doré worked primarily with wood engraving and steel engraving. In 1853, Doré was asked to illustrate the works of Lord Byron. This commission was followed by additional work for show more British publishers, including a new illustrated English Bible. A decade later, he illustrated a French edition of Cervantes's Don Quixote, and his depictions of the knight and his squire, Sancho Panza, have become so famous that they have influenced subsequent readers, artists, and stage and film directors' ideas of the physical "look" of the two characters. He continued to illustrate books until his death in Paris following a short illness. The city's Père Lachaise Cemetery contains his grave. (Bowker Author Biography) show less

As ever, Dover performed a praiseworthy service to the reading community with this freestanding edition of the masterful Dore illustrations to the Divine Comedy for those who don't want to find the rather cumbersome, allergen-rich, and pricey editions where they originally appeared. The illustrations are a fine match for the poem's severity. Audiences in general seem to be most interested in the Inferno, and indeed those illustrations have the most immediate visual and emotional impact, but show more the etchings for the much more abstract Paradiso were surely more difficult to conceive and execute. The excerpts from the lines of the poem which are attached are sufficient to understand the illustration, though they obviously don't fully substitute for the full context. show less
These pictures are a pleasure in themselves, and they are wonderful to review after having imagined the Rabelais stories in the course of reading. There is a notable inconsistency to the depiction of various characters by Doré, arguably reflecting a similar inconsistency on the part of St. François. Also, this book is a clip-art goldmine for Thelemites.
Beautiful reproductions of Dore's illustrations of Milton's Paradise Lost. Details are incredible. Dynamic of the scenes is breath-taking, just look at those parts where angels roam the Earth. Pure joy for the eyes. Proportions, light, scenery (especially from the creation part of the story), everything looks epic.
I have a feeling that Dore's art was inspiration for the golden age comic artists like Hal Foster.
Excellent art book, highly recommended to Dore's fans and graphics aficionados.

This is a beautifully illustrated book of classic fairy tells written by Charles Perrault with 35 black-and-white illustrations by Gustave Dore which include Little Red Riding Hood, Little Thumb, The Sleeping Beauty in the Woods, Cinderella, Puss in Boots, Riquet with the Tuft, The Fairy, and Blue Beard.
One of my reading goals in 2017 is to revisit some favorite books that I enjoyed as a young girl. I loved that the stories were told in the original form, not the Disney style. I forgot how show more scary the original Little Red Riding Hood story actually was.
For $1.50 I purchased a copy formatted for an Amazon Fire tablet. The illustrations are magnificent and I thought the Victorian look of the stories was just beautiful. When I delivered it to my Kindle Oasis, an ereader, the illustrations were just as crisp and clear. I loved this book, but some of the fairy tale versions may be too scary for young children. show less
